US tariff changes – support for Australian businesses

Understand the changes

The United States (US) has imposed a 10% baseline tariff, which took effect from 3.01 pm Saturday 5 April AEST. On 1 August the US announced that the 10% reciprocal tariffs on Australian exports to the US will remain. Most goods originating in Australia will be subject to this 10% tariff on import into the US. The new tariffs will be paid by US importers.

In addition to the 10% baseline tariff, higher reciprocal tariff rates have been announced for many other US trading partners. We’re monitoring US action closely to assess any potential impacts for Australia.

Suspension of de minimis exemptions

The US will suspend the de minimis exemption for all low-value imports to the US from 29 August 2025. As a result, all goods valued at $US800 or less will be subject to country-specific tariff rates.

The Australian Government is working closely with Australia Post, Australian Border Force and the US Customs and Border Protection to assess the impacts on Australians and Australian businesses.

Australia Post

Australia Post announced on 9 September 2025 that it plans to resume postal sending to the US and its overseas territories on or before Thursday, 25 September 2025.

This announcement follows Australia Post, along with other international postal operators, temporarily partially suspending postal services to the US.

Australia Post is making operational adjustments to ensure compliance with international requirements. It is treating this matter with the highest priority so it can reinstate services to the US as quickly as possible.

Australia Post has also partnered with Zonos®, a third-party provider authorised by US Customs & Border Protection, to help its business contract customers comply with the new requirements.
